Medicine Hat, AB –– July 1st is a special day in Canada as residents celebrate their country’s birthday and 2017 will be Canada’s 150th. But for some NHL players July 1st is a time to potentially pack their bags, sell the house and move their families to a different city to continue their careers. This off season only 5 former Tigers will potentially be searching for new homes this summer.
Vern Fiddler (UFA), Emerson Etem (UFA), Tyler Pitlick (UFA), Linden Vey (RFA) and Marek Langhamer (RFA) are all set to become free agents starting Saturday July 1st when free agency kicks off. Langhamer was offered a qualifying offer earlier this month but still will need to accept the offer or else become a free agent.
Packing and moving to a new city isn’t the easiest and for Kris Russell it would have been deja vu all over again, moving to his 5th team of his career. However General Manager Peter Chiarelli made sure Russell would not have to pack his bags and inked him to a 4 year, 16 million dollar contract to keep the defenceman a part of the youth movement in Edmonton.
There are also 5 players in the American Hockey League who’s contracts have expired for the 2017-18 year and they include:
- Miles Koules – Cleveland Monsters
- Elgin Pearce – Manitoba Moose
- Kale Kessy – Manitoba Moose
- Ty Stanton – Toronto Marlies
- Curtis Valk – Utica Comets
It will be interesting to see who ends up where when free agency kicks off Saturday morning. Not only could signings be in the works but trades as well as earlier Friday morning Tyler Ennis was shipped to the Minnesota Wild from the Buffalo Sabres, you can read more about the deal here -> http://tigershockey.com/article/former-tiger-ennis-headed-to-wild
