TIGERS DEFEAT OIL KINGS 4-3 IN A SHOOTOUT
The Medicine Hat Tigers will head into their holiday break on a high note with a 4-3 shootout win over the Edmonton Oil Kings.
Captain Mark Rassell scored the lone goal in the shootout to give the Orange and Black the win while netminder Jordan Hollett turned away 30 shots.
This was the first time this season these two central division rivals have faced off. Oil Kings’ Davis Koch got his team on the scoreboard early with a powerplay goal at 3:28 in the first period.
But the Tigers quickly responded as David Quenneville scored 40 seconds later to tie the game. Max Gerlach got one past Oil Kings’ goaltender Josh Dechaine to double the lead for the Tigers before the end of the first period.
Dawson Heathcote scored his 5th goal of the season in the middle frame assisted by Jaeger White and Gerlach. The Tigers headed to the dressing room with a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.
The Oil Kings didn’t give up and Tomas Soustal scored in the last half of the final frame to cut the lead to 1.
Afterwards, a late powerplay for the Oil Kings paid off with a goal from Trey Fix-Wolansky to send the game to overtime.
Both sides had their chances in overtime but nothing got past goaltenders Hollett and Dechaine.
Rassell was the first shooter for the Tigers in the shootout and the only one to score.
The Tigers ended the first half of their season with a 18-14-2-0 record and will host the Lethbridge Hurricanes (15-16-2-0) December 27th, 2017 at the Canalta Centre. The puck will drop at 7:00 p.m.
