2017 SKILLS COMPETITION RECAP

Medicine Hat, AB — The Medicine Hat Tigers took a break from game action this past weekend to celebrate giving back to the community with their annual Skills Competition brought to you by ATB Financial.  The Tigers competed in 6 different events and sent the 600+ fans on a balmy January evening entertained and happy with a great showing of skill and speed.

In the night’s first event, the team’s were tasked with putting their fastest skaters against each other to determine who actually is the fastest skater on the team.

Heat 1: Bradley vs. Jevne- Winner: Jevne – 14.00 seconds

Heat 2: Hamblin vs. Preziuso – Winner: Hamblin – 15.43 seconds

Heat 3: Rassell vs. MacPherson – Winner: MacPherson – 15.21 seconds

Heat 4 (2 fastest times): Bradley vs. Jevne – Winner: Bradley – 15.29 seconds

Team Owre wins the Fastest Skater competition with a time of 14.00 seconds

The night’s second event was a showcase of skill and talent in the Accuracy Shot, shooting down 4 targets in the quickest amount of time and least amount of pucks. Each player had 10 pucks to knock down the 4 targets.

Fischer: 4/10 pucks  – 24.75 sec                 Kirichenko: 3/10 pucks – 30.88 sec

Dahlstrom: 3/10 pucks – 26.67 sec                 Shaw: 3/10 pucks – 26.18 sec

Butcher: 1/10 pucks – 25.94 sec              Chyzowski: 2/10 pucks – 23.41 sec

Team Butcher wins the Accuracy Shot competition with Zach Fischer’s 4/10 pucks in 24.75 seconds.

In one of two marquee events on this night, the Hardest Shot competition was led by potential winner Dalton Gally, who was in for a surprise Tuesday as the competition was stiff. This year the contestants had 2 shots to try and break the 100mph barrier. Gally beat his personal bests with his shots on the net.

Team Butcher wins the Hardest Shot Competition with Dalton Gally’s  94mph and 92mph blasts.

In one of the unique events of the night, the two teams were setup in the Team Relay, an event which puts both agility and stick handling to the test. There were 2 groups (1 from each team) in this event made up of 5 players each. The fastest time was the winner.

Forrest, Henderson, Butcher, Gerlach: 52.68 sec

Rubins, Jevne, Shaw, Haden: 1min 8.98 sec

Team Butcher won the Team Relay competition with a total time of 52.68 seconds.

The other marquee event of the competition, the Showtime Shootout which was highlighted last season by a Steven Owre’s “California goal”, with Owre looking to repeat and Mark Rassell trying to take the event in 2 of 3 years! Each player had 2 chances to impress the judges and record the highest scores possible (out of 30 points per round).

Forrest: 17, 30 = 47 pts                         MacPherson: 25, 24 = 49 pts

Dahlstrom: 22, 22 = 44 pts                         Owre: 27, 18= 45 pts

Rassell: 27.5, 30 = 57.5 pts                          Haden: 21, 27.5 = 48.5 pts

Team Butcher wins the Showtime Shootout with Mark Rassell’s 57.5 points.

The final event of the night was a fun Elimination Shootout, a time where both teams are sent at the goalie in an attempt to be the last player standing.

Team Owre wins the Elimination Shootout by Mason Shaw being the last person standing, scoring in 2 of 2 rounds of the competition, beating both Chad Butcher and Jordan Henderson.

The overall winner of the competition was Team Butcher who had the overall lead in the competition all night, despite losing the final event of the night.

Another victory was had on this night as the Tiger fans in attendance help raise $4175.50 to the MS Society of Canada! Thank you!
