THE STORY COMING IN
After coming up short in back to back contests against the Swift Current Broncos last weekend, the Medicine Hat Tigers will look to get in the win column with a pair of contests against Central Division Opponents this weekend. On Friday the team travels to Red Deer to do battle with the Rebels for the first time this season. The Rebels currently are off to a 2-1 start this season.
TIGERS VS REBELS
These two teams faced each other five times during the shortened 2020-2021 season, with the Tigers completing the season sweep 5-0-0-0. Over the last five years Medicine Hat holds the edge in the series 14-1-1-0. The Tigers powerplay is 1 for 8 on the season (12.5%) while the Rebels are 3 for 13 this season (23.1%)
RED DEER REBELS
The Rebels are coming off a convincing win against the Swift Current Broncos after splitting the opening weekend against the CHL’s top ranked team in the Edmonton Oil Kings. Scoring has been done through a committee approach with four players currently tied for the team lead in points. Veteran Ben King leads the team with a pair of goals. Chase Coward has started all three contests for the Rebels and is currently 2-1 with a 2.01 GAA and a 0.929 SV%.
WHO TO WATCH – TIGERS
Lukas Sjevkovsky a Pittsburgh Penguins Draft Pick (2020 NHL DRAFT – RD 4, 108) is off to a white hot start this season. The 20 yeard Point Roberts, Washington product wasn’t dressed for the teams first game of the season, but recorded a pair of highlight reel goals in the Tigers Home Opener against the Broncos. The dynamic winger had a multitude of chances mostly created by his foot speed and his explosive first step.
WHO TO WATCH – REBELS
Ben King leads the Rebels in scoring this season with two goals and one assist through three games this season. The 6’3” centre from Vernon, BC is looking to build off the year before, having led the Rebels in scoring in the shortened 2020-2021 season, registering 28 points in 21 games (12G, 16A).
- Forward Lukas Svejkovksy was drafted in the 4th round, 108th overall in the 2020 NHL entry draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
- Goaltender Garin Bjorklund was selected in the 6th round, 179th overall in the 2020 NHL entry draft by the Washington Capitals.
- Defenceman Dru Krebs was selected in the 6th round, 176th overall in the 2021 NHL draft entry draft by the Washington Capitals.
