Medicine Hat, AB — Rookie defenceman Eric Van Impe is looking forward to returning to action this fall to see what the team can accomplish.
The 17-year-old Calgary native picked up six points (2G, 4A) in 63 games played last season and will be looking to build off that in his sophomore year which will also be his first year of NHL Draft Eligibility. Below he reflects back on his rookie season while sharing what he has been up to so far this summer.
Q. What is your favourite memory from this past season with the Tigers?
My favourite memory from the season was winning game one against Edmonton in the playoffs. The playoffs are an exciting time of the year and it’s always fun to win.
Q. Were there any veteran players that you looked up to this season, that might have helped you develop your game? If so, who and why?
I’d say Linus helped me out throughout the season. Either from watching him play, trying to learn things from him to add to my game or talking to him about certain things during practices or games.
Q. Thinking back to training camp, what is the one thing you think you have improved on the most during this past season?
From last year’s training camp to the end of the season, I think I have done a good job at adjusting to the pace of play that the league brings.
Q. What are you focusing on improving for this upcoming season?
My main goal this offseason has been to continue strengthening my legs and improving my foot speed.
Q. What is your training regime like in the summertime?
This summer I’ve been working out five times a week whether it be lifting weights, jumping and agility or cardio.
Q. Do you play any summer sports?
I’m not really heavy into any summer sports. I golf a bit but other than that no sports really.
Q. Do you have plans for summer vacation?
I went to LA for a week recently and met up with Nick for a couple of days. My family also goes up to the lake pretty much every weekend.
Q. What is the best part of being home?
The best part of being home for the summer is being with your family and friends that you don’t really get to see during the hockey season.
Q. What do you miss the most from Medicine Hat?
What I miss the most is definitely playing the game and my teammates.
Q. What are you looking forward to the most for this upcoming season?
I think we are going to have a good team this year so I’m excited to see what we’re going to be able to accomplish this year.
