Medicine Hat, AB — The Medicine Hat Tigers defeated the Lethbridge Hurricanes 5-4 in a shootout to win their third straight game in three nights since returning to action after the holiday break.
Ryan Jevne scored the game-winning goal in the shootout while Jordan Hollett stopped 36 of 40 shots faced. Joel Craven had his first career two-goal game in the win.
After a scoreless first period, the Tigers and the ‘Canes traded a pair of goals in the second. Hurricanes’ rookie Justin Hall opened the scoring midway through the stanza.
Jevne responded for the Tigers by firing the puck past Reese Klassen’s blocker. Jevne’s 19th goal of the season was assisted by Elijah Brown and Cole Clayton.
Hurricanes’ Nick Henry scored to regain the lead for the home team but the lead was short lived as Craven scored from the point to tie the game up 2-2 late in the period. Baxter Anderson and Tyler Preziuso combined on Craven’s first goal of the night.
Early into the final frame, the Hurricanes scored two goals 47 seconds apart to make it a 4-2 hockey game. Dylan Cozens scored the first and Jake Leschyshyn scored the second one on a power play.
The Tigers continued to push and their hard work was rewarded when Craven scored his second goal of the night from the point to cut the lead to 4-3. Craven’s 3rd goal of the season was assisted by James Hamblin.
Late in the game, Brown scored his fifth goal of the season to tie the game up and force overtime. Clayton and Jevne combined on the play.
Neither team was able to finish the game in overtime so it went to a shootout. Josh Williams and Hurricanes’ Jordy Bellerive were the only goal scorers out of the first three shooters. Hurricanes’ fourth shooter missed before Jevne scored the game-winning goal.
The Orange and Black are now 20-15-1-2 and will return home to host the Vancouver Giants Wednesday night at the Canalta Centre. The puck will drop at 7PM.
