RIK FEDYCK

Medicine Hat, AB — The Medicine Hat Tigers allowed two empty-net goals late in the game and fell 5-2 to the Vancouver Giants on Sunday night.

Trailing 3-2 with just under two minutes remaining in regulation, goaltender Mads Søgaard was called to the bench while possession was in the Giants’ end. The Giants won the puck and Lukas Svejkovsky skated it down the ice to score on the empty net. Shortly after, the Tigers were given a power play opportunity and Søgaard was called to the bench once more. This time Milos Roman won possession of the puck and sent it down the ice to seal the 5-2 victory for the Giants.

Tristen Nielsen opened the scoring for the Giants midway through the first period to make it 1-0 for the home team.

Early into the second stanza, Brett Kemp set up Nick McCarry to score and tie the game up 1-1. McCarry’s goal was his third of the season.

The Tigers were tenacious throughout the period but with less than five minutes to play the Giants regained the lead when Zack Ostapchuk redirected the puck into the net.

Giants veteran defenceman Dylan Plouffe extended the lead to 3-1 early in the final frame.

With less than five minutes remaining in the game, Cole Clayton and Daniel Baker combined on the power play to set up Trevor Longo and bring the Tigers within 1. Longo’s goal was his third of the season.

After Longo’s goal while Søgaard was on the bench, Svejkovsky and Roman scored their empty net goals to make it 5-2 for the home team.

Søgaard stopped 21 of 24 shots faced while Giants goaltender Trent Miner stopped 33 of the Tabbies’ 35 shots.

The Orange and Black are 10-5-1-0 and they will travel to Prince George to face the Cougars on Wednesday night.
