After an exhilarating third period, the Medicine Hat Tigers defeated the Brandon Wheat Kings 4-3 in overtime.
On a play from Dylan MacPherson, Ryan Jevne scored the game winning goal 1:02 into overtime. All three contest this season between these two clubs have been solved in overtime, but this was the first time the Tigers secured the victory.
Stelio Mattheos and Ty Lewis scored in the first period to give the Wheat Kings a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.
Mark Rassell got the Orange and Black on the scoreboard early into the middle frame. He spun around in front of the net before sliding it home through Wheat Kings goaltender Logan Thompson’s legs. This marked Rassell’s 36th goal of the season and it was assisted by Kristians Rubins.
At the beginning of the final frame, David Quenneville’s shot went off the bar and in to tie the game up at 2. Trevor Longo and James Hamblin assisted Quenneville’s 19th goal which was his 50th point of this season.
Wheat Kings’ forward Connor Gutenberg quickly responded to regain the home team’s lead.
While Wheat Kings’ Marcus Sekundiak was serving a double minor, Gary Haden slotted home Jaeger White’s rebound to tie the game back up. Bryan Lockner assisted on the play.
The final period ended with a handful of penalties, but neither team were able to capitalize on their power plays after Haden’s goal.
Michael Bullion turn aside 22 of the 25 shots he faced. Thompson stopped 34 of the Tigers’ 38 shots.
The Tabbies are now 24-17-3-0 and will face the Moose Jaw Warriors tomorrow at Mosaic Place. The game will start at 3:00 p.m.
